The Subaru Outback blends the attributes of the wagon, SUV and
crossover and that means versatile interior, high-riding
stance, wagon silhouette, etc. The model provides high-quality
interior and gets also plenty of the safety gear as standard
but is also more capable off-road than most rivals. The Outback
was all-new for the 2015 model year and the 2020 Subaru Outback
should mark the start of the new generation.
The sixth-generation Outback should follow the introduction of
the seventh-generation Legacy sedan with the debut late in the
year or early 2020. Two models have always shared the platform
and powertrains and that will be the case with all-new versions
as well. The styling of the new Outback should also be more
rugged, a wagon-like form of the recently revealed sedan model
and interior and available equipment should also be similar.
2020 Subaru Outback: Design
The redesigned 2020 Subaru Outback will switch to the new
platform shared with the recently all-new Legacy sedan and
brand’s other nameplates like Forster and Impreza. The Subaru
Global Platform will bring increased rigidity of the body and
chassis as well of parts’ joints which should translate to
better handling, reduced vibrations and noise and addition of
Visually, the new Outback should arrive larger and with the
styling elements similar to what we can on brand’s recent
introductions including the Legacy sedan. We don’t expect a
more rugged appearance than in the current version.
The new grille will mimic the style of the unit on the new
Legacy and similar but sharper design of the headlights will
also be used. The model will have the defined profile body
lines and redesigned tailgate integrated with the new
Inside the cabin, the new Outback should provide more passenger
and cargo space thanks to the wheelbase stretch and longer
body. The current version delivers already impressive 73.3
cubic feet of the cargo room and up to 35.5 cubes with the rear
The design of the dash should be centered on the large
11.6-inch tablet-style touchscreen and most function will be
managed through this unit. There will also be physical volume
and climate controls.
The new Outback will also equip the newest safety equipment.
There will be an updated EyeSight suite of the safety systems
with lane centering, blind spot monitoring, fatigue level
function and more.
2020 Subaru Outback: Powertrains
The engine range of the new-generation 2020 Subaru Outback
should match the offer of the new Legacy sedan.
A 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated boxer four-cylinder engine will
deliver around 182 hp and torque of 176 pound-feet.
The next-level performance will provide a 2.0-liter
turbocharged flat-4 engine rated at 260 hp and 277 pound-feet
Both engines will be in the combination with the continuously
variable transmission system and capable all-wheel drive.
The new powerplants combined with the new platform will also
boost the efficiency of the model but remains to see how much.
2020 Subaru Outback: Arrival, Price
The new 2020 Subaru Outback should appear in showrooms late in
the year. The price will likely see a modest increase from the
current starting point of $26, 345.
